What is hypogonadism?
Hypogonadism refers to a condition in which the body does not produce enough testosterone. This happens when the testes or ovaries do not function properly.
There are two main types of hypogonadism:
- Primary hypogonadism - This means there is a problem with the testes or ovaries directly. They do not produce enough sex hormones.
- Secondary hypogonadism - This type is caused by a problem with the pituitary gland or hypothalamus. These parts of the brain signal the testes/ovaries to produce hormones. If the signals are disrupted, hormone production goes down.
Some signs and symptoms of male hypogonadism may include:
- Low sex drive
- Erectile dysfunction
- Depressed mood
- Difficulties with concentration and memory
- Fatigue
For females, symptoms can include:
- Irregular periods or absence of periods (amenorrhea)
- Reduced pubic and armpit hair
- Hot flashes
- Vaginal dryness
Hypogonadism Testing
If hypogonadism is suspected, blood tests can help confirm the diagnosis. Checks levels of testosterone, FSH, and LH.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on age and aims to replace lacking hormones.
- Testosterone replacement - Testosterone medications or gels
- Fertility medications - Boost sex hormone production
- Hormone therapy - Estrogen/progestin therapy for women
