Postmenopause

What is postmenopause?

The term postmenopause refers to the time after a woman has experienced 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. This marks the end of a woman's reproductive years.

On average, women reach postmenopause around the age of 51. However, it can occur earlier or later, between the ages 40-55 years old. The phase leading up to postmenopause is called perimenopause, which can begin up to 10 years beforehand.

Symptoms
During the perimenopausal transition, women may experience irregular periods, hot flashes, trouble sleeping, mood changes, and vaginal dryness. After postmenopause sets in, periods end completely. Other symptoms like hot flashes may continue or even worsen for some women in the first few postmenopausal years.

Long-Term Health Changes

With the drop in estrogen levels after menopause, some risks increase while others decrease. For example, risks of osteoporosis, heart disease, and urinary incontinence rise. However, risks of breast cancer and irregular bleeding decrease. Managing these health changes is an important part of life after menopause.
